Introducing Our Unqiue Retirement Community
Situated in the historic rural Essex market town of Braintree, our retirement community is situated close to local amenities, fine Essex countryside and just 30 minutes from the Blackwater estuary and Colchester town.
Here at The Hawthorns Braintree residents lead an independent, active lifestyle free of the daily worries and hassles of modern life. We are a friendly, companionable community of like-minded retirees; we dine together, we have fun together, and when we are not doing this, chances are we are relaxing in the privacy of our own apartments. We are truly a retirement home from home.
With only one monthly all-inclusive rental charge to pay budgeting is made all the more straightforward. This transparent charge, free from hidden extras, covers rent, insurance, free Wi-Fi, council tax, maintenance, a weekly linen service, high-quality, communal dining, and regular minibus excursions for shopping and leisurely pursuits across Essex. In fact the only bill you will need to pay is your personal telephone bill and contents insurance.
The Hawthorns offers a choice of studio, one- or two-bedroom apartments. Some apartments have balconies and patios, but all are modern, light and airy and decorated to a high standard. Each has a kitchenette and shower room and comes fully fitted with carpets and curtains, although you may bring your own if you prefer. The apartments are for you to furnish in your own way.
All apartments have TV, telephone and internet points, instant hot water, temperature control on the central heating and since there is an integrated alarm system and a supportive manager on call 24-hours a day, no need for any concerns about safety and security.
All Play & No Work!
As well as your personal living space, there is much more to enjoy. The Hawthorns is not just a collection of apartments; we are a vibrant, friendly community of retirees. Our retirement home has a coffee lounge where you can sit at chat over a morning coffee, a library for quiet times with the daily paper or a book or puzzle, a room for showing films and a hair and beauty salon for that bit of extra pampering.
Friends and family are always welcome and join us regularly for meals as well as recreational activities. They are part of the atmosphere of the home. If your apartment is not big enough to put up guests, you can arrange for them to stay in a guest room, and if you would like to have a special celebration with your loved ones, a private dining room is at your disposal.
It won’t be difficult or a chore to make new friends as there is so much going on, once you step outside your apartment. Whether it is our monthly tea dances and regular talks, performances and shows including a regular pianist on the grand piano, quiz nights and special evenings such as the New Year’s Eve Dinner and Ball make for a full social calendar.
Day to day, there are activities such as indoor bowls, croquet on the lawn, chess, snooker and plenty keep-fit and crafting sessions. Our minibus can take you to the shops or out on trips, as there is so much lovely countryside waiting to be explored, whether it is the estuaries and creeks of the Essex coast or slightly further afield to the Constable territory of Dedham Vale. Many residents volunteer locally and enjoy raising money for charity, we are certainly a community that is active with and well connected to the local Braintree area.

Food for Thought
We know how much importance residents place on their meals, so we make sure that each dining experience is as good as we can make it. It’s quite an atmosphere when we all gather and the dining hall hums with chatter and the talk of upcoming events.
Our chef team take care of the sourcing and preparation of the food, but we also make sure that the tables are beautifully set and that service is friendly and helpful. There are several choices at every meal, including a standard vegetarian option. Lunch is the main meal of the day, when an aperitif and wine are served, and fresh fruit, cakes and biscuits are always available throughout the day should you feel peckish.
Themed events are popular and gives us a chance to explore some slightly more exotic fare. In fact, whatever the event or occasion, beautiful food is never far from the action and there is a private dining room reserved for special occasions with family and friends.
