Having been a vegetarian her entire life, Rose was pleased to announce Grant as the winner and praised his ability to provide his residents with exciting, colourful, and most importantly, vegetarian dishes. She also recently turned to veganism and has written cookbooks on the subject, as well as wellness in cooking.

Paul Tripney, General Manager at The Hawthorns Braintree, said, “Grant has worked incredibly hard to ensure the residents are knowledgeable in all aspects of vegetarian cooking by putting on demonstrations and talks.  He’s always on hand to have a chat to ensure to meet all resident’s dietary requirements”.

Simon Lawrence, Avery’s Head of Culinary, said, “As proud members of Vegetarian for Life, we have actively encouraged and developed our chefs to compete in this competition. Avery continues to promote inclusivity for older vegetarians and vegans, and we were delighted to be nominated in three categories. In what has been a challenging year, our culinary teams have continued to push the boundaries of care catering with their creative flair commitment and passion, producing dishes that are thoughtful, innovative nutritious and flavoursome.”

On his win, Grant commented, “I’m delighted to win the Veggie Care Chef of the Year.  I’m very passionate about vegetarian cookery and always keen to pass on my knowledge and encourage participation.  At our restaurant, non-vegetarians actively choose a vegetarian dish based on the taste and description.  We are committed to holding talks and demonstrations, reinforcing the health benefits of vegetarian cookery while ensuring each dish is balanced, flavoursome and meets each individual’s dietary needs.  I would like to thank the team for their hard work and dedication to The Hawthorns”.
