Students accept Christmas card challenge

LOCAL students have accepted a challenge to design this year’s Christmas card for a Braintree retirement development – with a £1,000 prize for the winning school and a laptop for the winning student.

Students from three schools – Malting’s Academy, Alec Hunter Humanities College and Helena Romanes  – are being invited to come up with their designs which will be judged by a panel of residents and staff at The Hawthorns on Tortoiseshell Way and a winner chosen.

Gordon Swan, Manager at The Hawthorns, said: “We are keen to have a Christmas card which reflects the active, upbeat nature of The Hawthorns and its residents. We thought it would be interesting to offer our younger generation the opportunity to design a card which would strike a chord with our residents.

“Once the winning design has been chosen, we will arrange for the cards to be made and all proceeds from their sale will go to local charities. The winning student will be presented with a laptop and his school with a cheque for £1,000 to be spent on art facilities for their students.”

The Hawthorns offers residents a unique retirement lifestyle where, for an all-inclusive monthly fee, they can enjoy life to the full, complete with an extensive activity and excursion programme and all bills paid.

Gordon added: “What people want from their retirement years is changing. We cater for a very independent crowd who feel their best years are still ahead of them and I know they are looking forward to working with the youngsters on their card designs.”
