Retirement residents aiming for league entry

RESIDENTS at a Braintree retirement development are aiming to enter a team into the Essex indoor carpet bowls league after becoming hooked on the sport.

Just weeks after bosses at The Hawthorns at Meadow Park purchased a carpet and woods, a regular group of enthusiastic residents are regularly practising and playing under the supervision of Marguerite Hayes. Marguerite moved to The Hawthorns 14 months ago but has been playing indoor bowls for the past 20 years and only last weekend was part of the Braintree Roman Catholic Club which won the Ferris Cup in Braintree.

Marguerite said: “I play for my club on a Monday evening and other residents started asking me where I went every Monday. When I told them I played indoor carpet bowls, a number expressed a keen interest in trying it. When the management here heard about the interest, they purchased a carpet and sets of woods. Now, at least a dozen turn up to our regular sessions. We could do with more men as most of those currently taking part are ladies.

“I’m giving them the benefit of my 20 years’ experience playing the game and we soon hope to be the newest members of the Essex Indoor Carpet Bowls league.”

Gordon Swan, Manager at The Hawthorns which offers residents an all-inclusive  retirement lifestyle for a monthly rental charge, added: “Our residents are a very active bunch so I’m not surprised they have reacted so enthusiastically to this latest initiative. Marguerite has really galvanised their interest and we are very proud to have a cup winner in our midst. Who knows, this time next year, it might be The Hawthorns team challenging for the cup!”
