You’re never too old to enjoy a healthy lifestyle

A LOCAL golf and country club and a retirement complex have forged a ground-breaking relationship to show age need be no barrier to keeping fit.

Super-active residents at The Hawthorns retirement complex at Meadow Park, Braintree, which offers residents a unique retirement lifestyle including all meals, bills, entertainment and excursion for an all-inclusive monthly rental fee, were keen to expand their health interests. They were particularly keen to go swimming, do a bit of gym work and even have a round of golf.

Fortunately for them, the nearby Benton Hall Golf & Country Club at Witham has recently introduced an over-65s health and fitness membership, prompting the management team at The Hawthorns to strike an agreement with Benton Hall which enables its residents to utilise the club’s facilities.

Gordon Swan, Manager at The Hawthorns, said: “Our whole philosophy here is to provide an environment in which our residents can maintain an active, independent lifestyle. We arrange exercise classes here in the activities room, but a number of residents said how much they would enjoy the opportunity to swim or use a gym.

“We approached Benton Hall and have negotiated a deal which enables our residents use of the club’s facilities. There is no charge to our residents – this is a cost born by the management. We are all told of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle in older age so this arrangement is an excellent way of supporting this goal.”

Karen Field, Membership Manager at Benton Hall, said the senior membership package was proving very popular and she was looking forward to extending the facilities to residents of The Hawthorns.

“We have introduced tailored programmes such as fit and fun, Tai Chi and aqua aerobics specifically aimed at the over-65s. The membership is excellent value and offers a great social as well as fitness and health environment.”

One of the many Hawthorns’ residents keen on utilising the services at Benton Hall is Brian Hennessey. He said: “The facilities here at The Hawthorns are first class and one of the reasons we moved here, but to now also be offered the facilities at Benton Hall is icing on the cake. I can’t wait to make use of them on a regular basis.”
