Testimonials

“It's lovely not having to worry about paying the bills or doing any housework. I came here and it's all provided for me, I have not got to worry about getting to the shops - although I could go every morning (on the private coach) if I wanted to. The only thing I have to pay is my private telephone bill.”

North Somerset’s older residents urged to get active!

A free open day to encourage exercise and healthy eating for older people in Bristol and North Somerset is being held in Clevedon on 1 May 2013 from 10am to 4.15pm.

The event, dubbed ‘Retain and Regain’ is the brainchild of Jenny Hume, Activity Coordinator at the Hawthorns Retirement Living facility in Clevedon, who are putting on a coordinated day of activity, nutritional advice and awareness raising. Other organisations taking part are North Somerset Council’s Go4Life, Age UK and Vision North Somerset.

‘Retain and Regain’ will be the first event of its kind specifically aimed at older people and was born out of the strong medical evidence that exercise and healthy living become more important for the over 60s.  Regular physical activity lowers  the risk for a variety of conditions in the over 60s, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, and obesity. Regular exercise also prevents loss of bone mass and improves balance and reduces the risk of falling. Meanwhile Age UK says that less than half of over 55s are doing the recommended 2.5 hours of exercise per week with one in eight not doing any exercise at all.

Goldie Tripney, Manager at the Hawthorns explains:

“There is an increasing aging population in our area and we wanted to raise awareness about the benefits of exercise and healthy living with a fun day of activities. We have free taster sessions of circuit training, Zumba Gold, Pilates, Tai Chi, golf putting, snookerand sitter-size which anyone can come along to. We are also holding advice workshops on nutrition and staying healthy later on in life. We would encourage anyone to drop in and get some free and helpful advice and take part in the taster sessions.”

Retain and Regain will be held at the Hawthorns Retirement Living Facility, 18 - 19 Elton Road
